With a song-writing style National Public Radio called “strong,
passionate and poetic”, folk singer Kerry Getz releases her
second album “It’s A Wonderful Life” in time for
the holiday season. Through this 11-song offering, Getz mixes
traditional, contemporary and original holiday tunes in a way
that attracts the listener with the familiar, while offers a
refreshing and elegant vocal flair.
The CD starts off with Getz’s haunting rendition of “Lullay Lully”,
which sets the fire-side mood that lingers throughout the entire
disc. Following in quick order are “The Wexford Carol” and
“Christmas Time is Here,” both refreshing takes on time-honored
holiday songs. Peppered between them is the original “Suspended
in December,” which offers a good melody and an impressive
contemporary sound that will have you humming throughout the day.
Since that’s the point of holiday music, it’s a good thing and as
the CD progresses, the songs get stronger, with “In the Rain” and
the title track offering the most promise as a memorable re-play.
The Los Angeles Times said, “Getz is long overdue for the national
platform she deserves” and as a song-writer at least, that could
be true, since Getz co-wrote “Suspended in December”, “In the
Rain” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” With each song her voice
reminds one a young Tori Amos, Bic Runga or Dido. But there’s
still some work to be done to avoid become a driving classic, as
in, a CD that sits in someone’s car amongst a million other CD’s
and is only played on long trips. The sleepiness of each tune can
make that a reality, so if we’d suggest anything, it’s that Getz
and her producers mix it up more in the future and actually put
this talented voice through its paces. Otherwise, this tiny
classic could remain just that. Tiny. And it would be a shame.
“It’s A Wonderful Life” was produced by Martin Beal and features Getz on lead vocals and
acoustic guitar. “It’s A Wonderful Life” is
released by World in Motion Records (www.worldinmotionrecords.com)
and is available on-line.
